Fernwood Botanical Garden

Fernwood Botanical Garden is situated along the St. Joseph River in Niles, Michigan. As with many nonprofits, they are working to ramp up their marketing efforts and class offerings post pandemic. Their design deliverable needs include Fernwood Notes, an oversized newsletter, rack cards, stationery, light festival materials, a trail map, and merchandise. With the goal of refreshing and revitalizing the brand, the new designs bring a fresh color palette, typography, and illustrations.

The deliverables highlight Fernwood’s trails, numerous gardens, educational center, event spaces, and their many member happenings. Their mission is to enrich people’s lives by awakening and deepening their appreciation of nature aligns with my interest in sustainability. As sustainable design is most important to my research agenda, I believe practicing design through a sustainable mindset is equally important. To that end, materials, vendors, and supply chains for printed deliverables are evaluated to work toward sustainable goals.

Fernwood needed a flexible design system to work across multiple deliverables, including print, digital, and merchandise. The emblems above are designed as part of a dynamic system that allows for branded merchandise, among other printed ephemera.

Fernwood has a repository of beautiful nature photos from the grounds, some of which are turned into duotones to invoke mood and add depth and richness to the brand.
